Main Conference Location The conference will be held from June 22- 25, 2016, primarily at John Jay College of Criminal Justice located at 524 W. 59th Street. The newly renovated building consists of large lecture halls for our plenary sessions, dining area for our meals and other activities, and many classrooms for breakout sessions. All classrooms are smart classrooms, with access to PowerPoint, projectors, audio, and visual equipment. Some plenaries will be live streamed as well. The building where our conference will be held has been featured on many television shows, including Law & Order: SVU, Girls, Nurse Betty, and the feature film, Annie.
Tour One of the traditional components of the conference is the Tour of the Host City. We will be using one of our local tour bus companies for a FANHS Group Tour on June 22, 2016 in the daytime. Local FANHS members will escort groups of FANHS participants all over New York City. To learn more about the tour, please sign up here. All tour fees are separate from conference fees.
Film Festival We are happy to add the FANHS Film Festival to the 2016 conference! Marisa Aroy, Emmy-award winning producer (also known for her work as producer/director of the Emmy-nominated documentary Delano Manongs) invites submissions of Filipino American movies from the past and present. A Film Festival room will be feature various films during all of the breakout sessions of the conference.
Authors Panels It has been a tradition for writers who have published books over the past two years to share their works during an Authors Reception. We will have one authors panel in the afternoon on 6/23, invited book talks by Professors EJ David and Anthony Ocampo on 6/24. On Thursday evening (6/23/16), we will host an invited authors panel and talkback featuring Mia Alvar (author of In The Country).
Fashion Show (Thursday 6/23) Another new event for our FANHS conference in New York is a fashion show! This will provide the space for up-and-coming Filipino fashion designers in New York to showcase some of their work, focusing on Filipino/Filipino-American-inspired themes and concepts. Fashion show will take place on Thursday night (6/23/16).
FANHS Theater Night Out! (Friday 6/24) FANHS is delighted to offer two Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals currently on Broadway at discount prices followed by a talk-back with members of the cast. Come see Broadway classic Phantom of the Opera starring Ali Ewoldt (first pinay and woman of color to play the lead) or Tony-nominated show School of Rock with Jaygee Macapugay (only pinay and woman of color in the cast). Children/Youth Program FANHS welcomes young people of all ages to join us for our conference. We will have activities for children (toddlers, elementary school) and adolescents and young adults (middle school, high school).
Student Travel Scholarship: Thanks to generosity of some donors, FANHS will be able to provide some travel stipends to several FANHS students (undergraduate and graduate). To apply for the fund, please fill out this form by 5/15/16.
